He was driving 60mph in a 40mph zone, on the wrong side of the road, and lied about whether the cyclist had lights – he got 240 hours community service.

Pretty shocking, really…

I’ll be closed for a few days – probably the rest of this week – due to the imminent arrival of offspring. I’ll update this if anything changes – back soon ;-)

Fuel Cell Bike 2, originally uploaded by Ben Cooper.

Found some old pictures of a bike I helped build for the artist Simon Starling – called Tabernas Desert Run, this fuel-cell-powered bike was ridden through the Spanish desert. It’s now in GoMA – Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art.

It’s got a 2kW Ballard fuel cell, running from two aluminium hydrogen tanks which would be fitted to the seatstays. The fuel cell was used to keep a NiMH battery pack charged, and the battery pack ran a 900W Heinzmann motor through a custom control system.

It’s meant to look bodged, by the way :)

Rohloff Brompton, originally uploaded by Ben Cooper.

Just finished this off – got the rack and mudguard to go on, but that’s it ;-)

I’m going to offer this as a kit to convert any Brompton to Rohloff gearing – it’s easy to fit, and the folding is unaffected apart from making the bike about 2cm wider.

According to the BBC, several travellers were forced to use bicycles to board cross-channel ferry services after all foot-passenger tickets sold out. One can only imagine the pain and suffering they must have endured…

Old Rohloff, originally uploaded by Ben Cooper.

I normally suggest that a Rohloff gets an oil change every 6-12 months, but here’s evidence that they can survive on a lot less. This one has been used for daily commuting and serious riding for seven years, and it’s just had it’s first ever oil change.

Still running perfectly ;-)

Signature Rohloff, originally uploaded by Ben Cooper.

Another one arrives ;-)

You probably can’t see in this picture, but they’ve got a very neat sliding dropout tensioner – makes adjusting the chain tension simple…

Mk.6 8-spd Brompton, originally uploaded by Ben Cooper.

Ho hum, another 8-speed Brompton finished off ;-)

This is the latest Mk.6 version of the 8-speed kit, with new tensioner design…

Due to the imminent arrival of offspring (I’m not going to say Mini Cooper as that’s a pun too far), I’m going to have to close the shop for a week or so some time around the middle of April. So best to call before visiting around that time ;-)

Rohloff dropouts on a Surly LHT, originally uploaded by Ben Cooper.

Sliding dropouts so there’s no need for a chain tensioner…
