Moulton Bikes

MoultonWheelSize

Alex Moulton’s design  principle seems obvious in retrospect - the large wheels of conventional road bikes are inefficient, adding both weight and rotational mass,  plus they’re relatively weak and unaerodynamic. So why not use small  wheels? Suspension makes up for the springiness lost in the wheels, and  the bike is both faster and comfier.

Another advantage of  small wheels is that they take up less space - packing a Moulton is  easier than a conventional bike. This wasn’t enough, though, so many  Moulton models are separable - the frame splits in seconds, and the New  Series forks also split easily, making the Moultons much easier to pack  away for travelling - the Moultons are perfect bikes for seeing the  world...

Moultons are all handmade in the UK from  stainless steel or Reynolds tubing - brazing such complex frames  together by hand is a skilled and time-consuming process, but the end  result is simply stunning.

There are three ranges of Moulton bikes - the  relatively affordable TSRs, the  historic AMs, and the amazing cutting-edge New Series.

The Moulton’s  separating mechanism is simple to operate - cables are split with little alloy splitters, then loosen one hand-wheel and one allen key to split  the frame neatly at the centre joint. This is enough to get the bike on a train or in a car boot. To go smaller, take off the bars, seatpost,  crankset and wheels - small enough to go in a case for air travel.
