The British Medical Association would like helmets to be compulsory for all cyclists. Think this is daft? We do - the BMA themselves have said that the health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks by a huge margin - but they have been persuaded to change their minds by a lobby group.

All child and adult cyclists should be forced to don lids, argues BMA http://www.bikebiz.co.uk/daily-news/article.php?id=4864

*We, the undersigned, are concerned about the British Medical Association’s sudden change to a stance in favour of helmet-compulsion for cyclists. We call for BMA to review its position through a thorough, open and transparent investigation of the helmet issue, in the light of all available evidence on: the effects of helmet-promotion and helmet-compulsion on cycle use and its associated health and other benefits; the numbers of fatalities and serious injuries which might be prevented through helmet-compulsion, and the cost-effectiveness of cycle helmet compulsion relative to (a) other measures to promote cycle safety and (b) helmet compulsion for activities other than cycling.
