This certainly is a rarity This is a Rotovelo velomobile made by Trisled in Australia, and it’s probably the only one in the UK. As you can imagine, shipping something this big from Australia wasn’t cheap.

The Rotovelo is unique among velomobiles in having a rotation-moulded plastic body – most velomobiles are fibreglass which cracks and dents easily, the Rotovelo is made using the same process as used for canoes so it’s very tough. Underneath is a steel chassis, with a telescoping boom to adjust for leg length. It’ll fit anyone from about 5’2″ up to 6’4″ at a guess.

There is quite a bit of spare storage space inside, alongside and behind the seat, so it could easily carry enough for touring. The nice thing about carrying stuff in a velomobile is you can just chuck it in – no worries about panniers, waterproofing or lashing stuff down.

This Rotovelo comes with two covers – an open one where your head sticks out, and a fully enclosed one with a glass windscreen and wiper (manually operated) – so you can, if you wish, stay dry and comfortable in the worst of the weather. Even with no cover on, weather protection is very good, and on warm days it’s nice to ride with the top off to stay cool

The gearing is a Rohloff 14-speed hub fitted by me here in Glasgow less than a year ago, and it’s had little use. It has two front disc brakes – the main brakes – operated off the right brake lever, and the left lever operates a V-brake on the rear wheel – mostly useful as a parking brake. Both levers have locking buttons so you can use them as parking brakes.

There is also a LED lighting system built in, with a rechargeable battery alongside the seat powering a very bright front white LED and a good rear red LED. A charger is included. There’s also a mirror.
