Found some old pictures of a bike I helped build for the artist Simon Starling – called Tabernas Desert Run, this fuel-cell-powered bike was ridden through the Spanish desert. It’s now in GoMA – Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art.

It’s got a 2kW Ballard fuel cell, running from two aluminium hydrogen tanks which would be fitted to the seatstays. The fuel cell was used to keep a NiMH battery pack charged, and the battery pack ran a 900W Heinzmann motor through a custom control system.

It’s meant to look bodged, by the way 🙂

Sliding dropouts so there’s no need for a chain tensioner…

Fitted the latest version of the 8-speed kit to a new bike today – usually, I make the parts as I need them, but this time I made all the parts first and then fitted them so I could time how long it takes.

About 50 minutes.

That’s converting a brand new singlespeed Brompton – it’ll take a bit longer if you need to take off a geared hub first…

A little modification needed, but works well 😉

The first of several Koga Signature Rohloff-equipped touring bikes has arrived – the new frame design with sliding dropouts is very neat.

I found an old box of photos from the Lancaster Cyclefest 1995 – mostly interesting for the awful fashion sense and the historic recumbents 😉

This is the late, much missed Rob Brock pulling out a commanding lead in the Brox race.

The box says Birdy, but there’s actually a complete Scorpion fs
recumbent trike in there – a bit of dismantling needed, but nothing
serious 😉

An interesting project – fitting the Alfine itself isn’t a big deal, getting it to work with a bar-end shifter is the trickier bit. The trick is to use a Travel Agent – a roller thingy designed to let road brake levers operate disc brakes.
